Creating New Worlds, One Word At A Time

I began much like any author who has come before me, with reading and a wild imagination. Through some trials and tribulations of growing up with a learning disability and a lisp, I found writing to be my savior. I devoured books with talking animals, wild and silly characters, and even stories about alternate dimensions and time travel. I dreamt of becoming a published author, but the idea of writing a long story was daunting. So, poetry became my first love in the writing sphere because of how expressive and short poetry helped me get through my formative teenage years by allowing me to express how I felt and gave me a unique internal perspective. While in high school, I wrote the first of many short stories and began a writing group with like-minded friends. With their help, I wrote my first novel. It is my pride and job and has never been published because while it clocks out at a whopping 100,000 words, it doesn’t feel complete, and I don’t believe it ever will. I graduated high school and went to a community college because I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life, and writing wasn’t something I could pay the bills with, or at least that’s what my parents thought. They wanted me to be realistic about my expectations, and I thank them for that. Because of them, I discovered my love for jewelry design, got a BA in graphic design, and even started a small business selling my jewelry wares at craft fairs and online. All the while, writing was something I did as a hobby, something to the nights. It wasn’t until I turned 34 that I realized half my life was gone and I had still yet to publish anything and decided I wanted to pursue something that was just for me, and since writing has always been something I was passionate about and loved doing, I would get my MFA in creative writing. And here we are, me in the last few months of the MFA program at Southern New Hampshire University, working on what I hope to be the first of many published novels.
